With a dream to perform on the world's biggest stages, Nico Barberan journeyed from the southernmost country of Chile to the windy city of Chicago, USA. Nico’s passion for music has led him to develop a unique blend of rock, blues, and Latin American sounds with touches of classical music. His traveling in Latin America, Europe, and The United States have exposed him to diverse of experience and cultures, enriching his music with colorful influences that create a captivating musical experience.
Nico’s love for music began unintentionally, much like a message in a bottle discovered by a young dreamer. At just 13, he came across Boom Boom by John Lee Hooker, and from that moment, the blues took root in his soul, lighting his musical path. In Chile, Nico earned a bachelor’s degree in music and electric guitar at ARICIS University, Santiago de Chile, playing with various bands, including his group Shabakano, which released a self-titled Afro-Latin album and toured the lush landscapes of southern Chile.
Enthusiastic to immerse himself in the Chicago blues scene, Nico moved to the Windy City, performing on various stages and at festivals. In 2019, he released his debut solo album, Homenaje, an instrumental fusion of rock and intricate arrangements with powerful solos. Around this time, Nico also earned a master's degree in applied pedagogy in classical guitar at Northeastern Illinois University, enhancing his technique on electric guitar and deepening the classical influences in his compositions.
After completing his studies, Nico moved to Arizona, where he quickly gained recognition as a powerful songwriter and performer, creating music in both English and Spanish. His debut single, “Horizon,” captures the spirit of chasing dreams, using the sun as a symbol of inspiration and life’s endless journey.
In Arizona, Nico’s talent stood out: he was honored by the Blues Phoenix Society in 2022–23 and became a finalist at the Tucson Folk Festival in 2022. His performances are known for their explosive guitar work, heartfelt vocals, and the ability to connect deeply with audiences — each note telling a story.
Now in 2025, Nico Barberan is back in Illinois and making waves across the Midwest, performing in the Chicago area, the North Shore, the Quad Cities, St. Louis, Springfield, and beyond. With a sound that bridges cultures and genres, Nico is an artist who leaves a lasting impression wherever he plays.
Nico’s connection to Latin American music remains deeply rooted. He is a founding member of the Qiru Duet, a clarinet-guitar duo that explores the cultural richness of Latin American music, with performances in Colombia, Mexico, Ireland, and across the United States.
